Description

This course covers the benefits of strengthening children with neurological disorders. The course discusses the effects of strengthening on spasticity, common misconceptions, and how to assess strength. The course then discusses how to design and progress an exercise program and how to adapt the program for children with special needs. Typical exercises for specific weaknesses are given, as well as fun ways to exercise each muscle group. Case examples are provided.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES*** Recall basic muscular, cardiovascular, cellular, psychological, and functional benefits of strength training in children with neuromotor dysfunction. Explain how strengthening does not increase spasticity or tone. Describe the need for strength training post-operatively. Identify the types of muscle contractions and muscle fibers. Recall basic components of muscular fitness Identify options for assessing muscle strength in children Recall steps of designing an exercise prescription Describe how to progress or adapt an exercise program as needed Identify typical areas of weakness in children with neuromotor dysfunction Choose a basic exercise to work on typical areas of weakness Differentiate and explain the benefits of several types of strength training options
