Description

This course consists of 5 modules which acquaint the rehab therapist with key terms and principles in pharmacology. This course teaches the rehab clinician’s role in medication management and monitoring, familiarizes the rehab professional with key components of pharmacokinetics and how exercise affects drug absorption, informs the rehab clinician how therapy treatment timing may need adjusting or monitoring due to pharmacodynamics, and increases the rehab professional’s understanding of types of drug related problems associated with medication use, such as how to distinguish between adverse drug reactions, hypersensitivity, drug abuse and drug toxicity. This is a must course for any rehab therapist working in today’s health care environment.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Identify areas of the study of drugs and therapeutic agents including pharmacology, pharmotherapy, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance, pharmacogenetics, and pharmacoeconomics. 2. Identify the three routes of administration for drugs and provide examples of each. 3. List 3 mechanisms by which a drug moves across membranes. 4. Compare and contrast local and systemic drug absorption. 5. Explain how exercise affects drug absorption, distribution, and excretion based on the latest research. 6. Differentiate intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may impact pharmacodynamics and thus a drug’s ability to produce its intended response in the body. 7. Describe how pharmacodynamic parameters of a drug or drug class can potentially affect the patient’s response to rehab interventions. 8. Identify how specific pharmodynamic variables may require adjustment in rehab treatment timing and/or monitoring of rehab therapy interventions. 9. Describe the rehab professional’s role in detecting adverse drug reactions. 10. List factors that increase an individual’s likelihood of experiencing a hypersensitivity reaction to a medication.
