This course covers medical ethics, ethical principles, and laws that govern occupational therapy. By taking this course you will learn how to apply the AOTA Code of Ethics in everyday practice. Learn how to determine if a situation is a legal or ethical issue, the difference between fraud and abuse, and how to use a model to analyze and make decisions regarding ethical issues in the workplace. Legal issues related to fraud and abuse are addressed including how to report those issues. Name the four basic theoretical concepts of medical ethics: respect for persons, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. 2. Name several philosophers who made key contributions to the discipline of ethics, and describe their contribution. 3. Apply the AOTA Code of Ethics to occupational therapy practice. 4. Review and apply aspects of state occupational therapy acts and identify the relationship between the Practice Act, rules and ethics. 5. Be able to discern between legal and ethical issues. 6. Describe a problem-solving model for dealing with legal and ethical issues. 7. In case studies, discern between legal and ethical issues, and be able to analyze the issues using the problem-solving model. 8. Describe how to report fraud and abuse, and how to prepare for a qui tam lawsuit.
