Description

This continuing education course provides physical therapy and occupational therapy professionals with up-to-date, evidenced-based information to understand and successfully manage patients who have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. The course includes discussions of applied anatomy, basic pathophysiology of distal median nerve compression, risk factors and contributing causes, demographics, and some of the most commonly occurring complications and co-morbidities. It provides an in-depth discussion of therapy evaluation and conservative treatment options for carpal tunnel syndrome, based on current literature findings. It also covers surgical intervention and rehabilitation after surgery. This course will be immediately useful in clinical practice for OTs, PTs, OTAs, and PTAs, ranging from general therapists to hand therapy specialists.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------COURSE OBJECTIVES: After successfully completing this continuing education course, the learner should be able to: 1. Identify applied anatomy of the upper extremity peripheral nerves; bones, muscles, and ligaments of the distal forearm, wrist, and hand; microanatomy of peripheral nerves. 2. Explain how anatomical attributes contribute to the effects of carpal tunnel syndrome. 3. Identify causes and risk factors associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). 4. Identify other causes of paresthesia and pain that can mimic CTS. 5. Outline key diagnostic factors and standard methods used to diagnose CTS. 6. Identify key components and special tests in a therapy evaluation for a patient with CTS. 7. Describe evidence-based conservative therapeutic interventions for CTS. 8. Identify and describe the types of surgical interventions for CTS. 9. Identify components of a post-surgical therapy evaluation following CTS release. 10. Identify possible complications following surgical intervention for CTS. 11. Discuss post-surgical rehabilitation following CTS release. 12. Recognize when to refer patients for specialized care following CTS release in case study.
