Description

Modalities should be carefully selected for their intended effect to enhance functional recovery. This course provides the therapist with the underlying rationale for selecting a therapeutic modality to be included in a therapy plan based on the known physiologic and physical effects of the agent, the safety and use of the agent, and the therapeutic goals, using the latest research available. This course covers a wide range of therapeutic agents: cryotherapy, thermotherapy, ultrasound, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, low-level laser, diathermy, traction, pneumatic compression, & alternative modalities. The importance of modalities, as they pertain to treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, pain symptoms, and promotion of tissue healing are emphasized. Included in this course are case studies to enhance application of basic principles, key points and “tips”, clinical controversies to discuss areas of misunderstandings or disagreement, updated evidence, evaluation & documentation tips. This is a great resource for all physical & occupational therapists and assistants. Includes the UPDATED comprehensive text by Michlovitz, Bellew, and Nolan (FA Davis 2016) Modalities for Therapeutic Intervention (6th ed). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES*** At the completion of this course, the therapist will be able to: 1. define various modalities including cryotherapy, thermotherapy, ultrasound, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, laser, diathermy, traction, and pneumatic compression. 2. select the appropriate agent based on the known physiologic & physical effects of the agent, and physical limitations of the patient in case studies. 3. predict the appropriateness of the agent given the precautions & contraindications of that particular agent. 4. assess & determine appropriate goals & integrate the appropriate modality in case studies. 5. interview and assess a patient in order to determine the appropriate agent & usage and be able to appropriately document use of that agent. 6. describe how to properly apply the agent to meet the client’s particular goal areas including preparing the skin properly, adjusting correct tension, pulse, duration, waveform, temperature, etc., monitor its effect during & after application, monitor vital signs, skin changes & client responses & describe appropriate instruction to the client & family. 7. explain the use of the chosen agent to patient, family, insurance company & physician 8. define terms such as alternating current, direct current, anode, cathode, bipolar, monopolar, resting membrane potential, buoyancy, conductor, denervation, voltage, waveform, density, diathermy, bursts, motor unit & more. 9. identify alternative modalities for pain & tissue healing including magnet therapy, monochromatic infrared photo energy & hyperbaric oxygen therapy. 10. describe electrophysiological testing of nerves & muscles & be able to identify when it is indicated. 11. site evidence for the efficacy of each of the modalities
